                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of August 9, 1955 (P.L.323, No.130), entitled
     2     "An act relating to counties of the third, fourth, fifth,
     3     sixth, seventh and eighth classes; amending, revising,
     4     consolidating and changing the laws relating thereto; and
     5     providing for regional renaissance initiatives," further
     6     providing for burial of dependents and other persons.

     7     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     8  hereby enacts as follows:
     9     Section 1.  Section 2166 of the act of August 9, 1955
    10  (P.L.323, No.130), known as The County Code, amended December
    11  22, 1965 (P.L.1162, No.456), is amended to read:
    12     Section 2166.  Provision for Burial or Cremation of
    13  Dependents and Other Persons.--Except as otherwise provided by
    14  law, the county commissioners of counties of the fourth, fifth,
    15  sixth, seventh and eighth classes shall provide for the burial
    16  or cremation of any person who dies in the county unless his
    17  body is claimed by a relative by blood or marriage, or by a
    18  friend, or by his fraternal or veterans' organization, or by a


     1  charitable organization, or by the Anatomical Board of the State
     2  of Pennsylvania, and is buried or cremated at the expense of
     3  such relative, friend or organization. [No such burial shall
     4  cost more than three hundred dollars ($300).] Upon receipt from
     5  the funeral director or other person conducting the burial or
     6  cremation of an itemized statement of the costs incurred in
     7  connection with the burial or cremation, the county shall
     8  contribute the sum of twelve hundred dollars ($1,200) toward
     9  such costs. The funeral director or other person conducting the
    10  burial or cremation shall notify the county promptly of any
    11  resources of which the director or person knows or learns, which
    12  resources, to the extent they are collected by the director or
    13  person, shall effect a reduction in the amount which the county
    14  shall pay toward the burial or cremation.
    15     Section 2.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
