AN ACT
Designating a bridge, identified as Bridge Key 11802, carrying
State Route 3008 over Clearfield Creek, Beccaria Township,
Clearfield County, as the Corporal Cecil J. Snyder Memorial
Bridge.
The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
hereby enacts as follows:
Section 1. Corporal Cecil J. Snyder Memorial Bridge.
(a) Findings.--The General Assembly finds and declares as
follows:
(1) Cpl. Cecil J. Snyder was born in Lyleville outside
of Coalport, Clearfield County.
(2) In May 1939, Cpl. Snyder enlisted in the United
States Army Air Corps where he received specialized training
as a technician.
(3) At the outbreak of World War II, Cpl. Snyder served
in the Pacific Theater, defending the Philippine Islands.
(4) Cpl. Snyder and many of his fellow soldiers were

taken prisoner by the Japanese when their base was captured.
(5) Cpl. Snyder was taken to Palawan Prison Camp where
he and other prisoners were forced to work as slave labor
building an airfield for the Japanese.
(6) On December 14, 1944, fearing the capture of the
island by the advancing Allies, the Japanese High Command
ordered all the prisoners to be killed.
(7) Cpl. Snyder and 144 soldiers were killed in what is
now known as the Palawan Massacre.
(8) Cpl. Snyder's remains were repatriated to the United
States and interred at the Jefferson Barracks National
Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri, in February 1952.
(9) Cpl. Snyder is also memorialized at his family plot
in Lyleville Cemetery.
(10) Cpl. Snyder received many commendations for his
service, including the Purple Heart, World War II Victory
Medal, American Campaign Medal, Army Presidential Unit
Citation, Army Good Conduct Medal and the Asiatic-Pacific
Campaign Medal.
(b) Designation.--The bridge, identified as Bridge Key
11802, carrying State Route 3008 over Clearfield Creek, Beccaria
Township, Clearfield County, is designated the Corporal Cecil J.
Snyder Memorial Bridge.
(c) Signs.--The Department of Transportation shall erect and
maintain appropriate signs displaying the name of the bridge to
traffic in both directions on the bridge.
Section 2. Effective date.
This act shall take effect in 60 days.
