                                     AN ACT

     1  Amending the act of June 2, 1915 (P.L.736, No.338), entitled "An
     2     act defining the liability of an employer to pay damages for
     3     injuries received by an employe in the course of employment;
     4     establishing an elective schedule of compensation; providing
     5     procedure for the determination of liability and compensation
     6     thereunder; and prescribing penalties," further providing for
     7     benefits for volunteer firemen, policemen and members of
     8     volunteer ambulance corps, rescue and lifesaving squads.

     9     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    10  hereby enacts as follows:
    11     Section 1.  Section 601(a) of the act of June 2, 1915
    12  (P.L.736, No.338), known as The Pennsylvania Workmen's
    13  Compensation Act, reenacted and amended June 21, 1939 (P.L.520,
    14  No.281), is amended by adding a clause to read:
    15     Section 601.  (a)  In addition to those persons included
    16  within the definition of the word "employe" as defined in
    17  section 104, "employe" shall also include:
    18     * * *

     1     (1.1)  persons who serve as volunteer policemen of the
     2  various municipalities who shall be and are hereby declared to
     3  be employes of such municipality for the purposes of this act
     4  who shall be entitled to receive compensation in the case of
     5  injuries received while actually engaged as a volunteer
     6  policeman or while going to or returning from any fire,
     7  accident, or other emergency which such volunteer policeman
     8  shall attend including travel from and the direct return to the
     9  policeman's home, place of business or other place where he
    10  shall have been when he received the call or alarm; or while
    11  participating in the police force of which they are members; or
    12  while repairing or doing other work about or on the police
    13  apparatus or buildings and grounds of such police force upon the
    14  authorization of the chief or other person in charge; or while
    15  answering any emergency call for any purpose or while riding in
    16  or upon the apparatus owned by the police force of which they
    17  are members at any time or while performing any other duties of
    18  such police force as are authorized by the municipality;

    20     Section 2.  The act is amended by adding a section to read:
    21     Section 602.  All volunteer firemen, policemen and members of
    22  volunteer ambulance corps, rescue and lifesaving squads who are
    23  receiving compensation under this act shall also receive
    24  additional compensation in an amount equal to the costs of
    25  health care insurance for members of their immediate family.
    26     Section 3.  This act shall take effect in 60 days.
