           E. Z. TAYLOR, B. SMITH, HERSHEY, GODSHALL, BURD, FARMER,
           S. H. SMITH, WASS AND PHILLIPS, APRIL 18, 1990

REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON STATE GOVERNMENT, APRIL 18, 1990

                                     AN ACT

1 Selecting and designating the Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus
2 horridus horridus) as the official State reptile of
     3 Pennsylvania.

4 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     5 hereby enacts as follows:
6 Section 1. Official State reptile.
7 The Timber Rattlesnake is the largest of three species of
8 venomous snakes found in Pennsylvania with a range that
9 stretches along the mountainous regions of the Commonwealth.
10 Despite its size, the Timber Rattlesnake has a generally mild
11 disposition and its bite is rarely fatal. Historically, this
12 species was the first rattlesnake encountered by the early
13 colonists of North America and was the snake symbolically
14 represented on the Navy Jack, Gadsden flag and numerous colonial
15 standards during the American Revolution. The Timber Rattlesnake
16 (Crotalus horridus horridus) is hereby selected, designated and
17 adopted as the official State reptile of Pennsylvania.
    18 Section 2. Effective date.

1 This act shall take effect immediately.
