REFERRED TO COMMITTEE ON TRANSPORTATION, JUNE 6, 2000

                                     AN ACT

1 Amending Title 75 (Vehicles) of the Pennsylvania Consolidated
2 Statutes, further providing for personal plates.

3 The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     4 hereby enacts as follows:
5 Section 1. Section 1341 of Title 75 of the Pennsylvania
6 Consolidated Statutes is amended to read:
     7 § 1341. Personal plate.
8 Upon request by the applicant, except as hereinafter
9 provided, the department may issue registration plates
10 consisting of any combination of numbers, letters or numbers and
11 letters requested by the applicant. These special plates may be
12 issued for special groups or for special purposes and bear an
13 appropriate designation. They shall have the same force and
14 effect as regular registration plates. The department may refuse
15 any combination of letters and numbers to prevent duplication or
16 for cause and shall adopt reasonable rules and regulations for
17 the issuance of the plates and for carrying out the provisions

1 of this section. The applicant shall comply with all laws and
2 regulations pertaining to registration including the payment of
3 any additional fees. The department is authorized to reissue a
4 combination of numbers or letters for a personal plate if the
5 department records reveal that no activity, such as renewal or
6 transfer of the personal registration plate, has occurred for a
7 period of five or more consecutive years and provided that the
8 personal registration plate was never reported as lost or
9 stolen. Whenever the department reissues an inactive personal
10 plate, the department may purge its records of all references to
11 the previous owners of that personal plate. The department
12 shall, however, note upon its records the reissuance of the
13 personal plate and to whom the plate was issued.
14 Section 2. This act shall take effect in 60 days.
