SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 20 Session of 1999


        INTRODUCED BY EARLL, JUBELIRER, LOEPER, BELAN, HART, MELLOW,
           BELL, BODACK, BOSCOLA, CONTI, CORMAN, COSTA, GERLACH,
           GREENLEAF, HELFRICK, KUKOVICH, O'PAKE, MOWERY, MUSTO, PUNT,
           ROBBINS, SALVATORE, STOUT, TARTAGLIONE, THOMPSON, TILGHMAN,
           WENGER, WHITE AND WAGNER, FEBRUARY 8, 1999

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, FEBRUARY 8, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 1999 as "Women's History Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, American women of every race, class and ethnic
     4  background have made historic contributions to the growth and
     5  strength of our nation in countless recorded and unrecorded
     6  ways; and
     7     WHEREAS, American women have played and continue to play a
     8  critical economic, cultural and social role in every sphere of
     9  the life of the nation by constituting a significant portion of
    10  the labor force working inside and outside of the home; and
    11     WHEREAS, American women have played a unique role throughout
    12  the history of the nation by providing the majority of the
    13  volunteer labor force of the nation; and
    14     WHEREAS, American women were particularly important in the
    15  establishment of early charitable, philanthropic and cultural
    16  institutions in our nation; and


     1     WHEREAS, American women of every race, class and ethnic
     2  background served as early leaders in the forefront of every
     3  major progressive social change movement; and
     4     WHEREAS, American women have been leaders not only in
     5  securing their own rights of suffrage and equal opportunity but
     6  also in the abolitionist movement, the emancipation movement,
     7  the industrial labor movement, the civil rights movement and
     8  other movements, especially the peace movement, which have
     9  contributed to a more fair and just society for all; and
    10     WHEREAS, Despite these contributions, the role of American
    11  women in history has been consistently overlooked and
    12  undervalued in the literature, teaching and study of American
    13  history; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 1999 as "Women's
    15  History Month" in Pennsylvania.
