SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 44 Session of 1999


        INTRODUCED BY SLOCUM, CORMAN, ROBBINS, WAGNER, COSTA, MADIGAN,
           STOUT, BRIGHTBILL, WOZNIAK, LEMMOND, MUSTO, TOMLINSON,
           KASUNIC, SCHWARTZ, MURPHY AND HART, MARCH 22, 1999

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MARCH 22, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating March 29 through April 3, 1999, as "Logging Safety
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The Kane Area Logging Safety Committee was
     4  established in 1969 to promote logging and sawmilling safety
     5  awareness throughout this Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, The harvesting of timber products from our forests
     7  is an important part of the economy of this Commonwealth, and
     8  timber continues to be a viable commodity to Pennsylvanians
     9  since it is a renewable resource; and
    10     WHEREAS, The timber industry is the fourth largest
    11  manufacturing industry in this Commonwealth; and
    12     WHEREAS, Safety is vital to the continued sustainability of
    13  the industry, and the control and reduction of industrial
    14  accidents is paramount to the well-being of all industry
    15  workers; and
    16     WHEREAS, The Kane Area Logging Safety Committee sponsors
    17  safety and awareness programs with the Sustainable Forestry


     1  Initiative of Pennsylvania to educate loggers, mill operators,
     2  foresters, other timber industry representatives and citizens
     3  and students on the importance of the industry and the
     4  importance of using safety measures at all times; and
     5     WHEREAS, The death of three loggers in central Pennsylvania
     6  during logging accidents in February 1999 highlights the
     7  continued importance of promoting logging safety; therefore be
     8  it
     9     RESOLVED, That the Senate declare March 29 through April 3,
    10  1999, as "Logging Safety Week" in Pennsylvania.
