SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 44 Session of 1997


        INTRODUCED BY MADIGAN, ROBBINS, LEMMOND, AFFLERBACH, TOMLINSON,
           SALVATORE, THOMPSON, FUMO, STOUT, O'PAKE, EARLL, KASUNIC,
           SLOCUM, BELL, COSTA, SCHWARTZ, MURPHY, STAPLETON, GERLACH AND
           WENGER, MAY 5, 1997

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 5, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Declaring the week of May 4 through 10, 1997, as "Arson
     2     Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Arson is a cowardly and deadly action, preying on
     4  the weakest and most vulnerable of our citizens; and
     5     WHEREAS, The effects of arson in terms of loved ones lost and
     6  homes and property destroyed continue to be devastating to its
     7  victims and their families; and
     8     WHEREAS, Every citizen is affected by the spiraling costs of
     9  insurance premiums, governmental expenses incurred as a result
    10  of arson and the incidence of resources devoted to fight this
    11  crime being diverted from other areas; and
    12     WHEREAS, Firefighters, police and emergency providers risk
    13  their lives in an effort to protect the victims and protect the
    14  property put in jeopardy by arsonists; and
    15     WHEREAS, In appreciation and recognition of the efforts of
    16  all those involved in the fight against arson, the firefighters,
    17  emergency services personnel, police, fire investigators and

     1  other law enforcement agencies, the Commonwealth should set
     2  aside a week to raise awareness and commemorate the efforts of
     3  these courageous public servants; therefore be it
     4     RESOLVED, That the Senate declare that the week of May 4
     5  through 10, 1997, be observed as "Arson Awareness Week" in
     6  Pennsylvania in recognition of the heinous nature of the crime
     7  of arson and the courageous efforts of the persons involved in
     8  combating arson.
