A RESOLUTION
1 Urging the public and civic leaders of this Commonwealth to
2 encourage youth service.
3 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania recently was
4 honored to host "The Presidents' Summit for America's Future,"
5 on April 27 through 29, 1997, which was called to foster
6 discussion of the needs of our youth and new means for
7 encouraging their healthy and positive development; and
8 WHEREAS, Many community needs rely for their satisfaction on
9 the participation of the community's members, including
10 mentoring and tutoring the young, caring for the infirm and
11 keeping our neighborhoods safe and clean; and
12 WHEREAS, While uncounted thousands of citizens of this
13 Commonwealth participate in uncompensated activities in their
14 communities, many needs still go largely unmet; and
15 WHEREAS, Service to others is both a necessary function of
16 full citizenship and a positive development of the community and
17 an important means of learning about the strengths and needs of
1 the community; therefore be it
2 RESOLVED, That the Senate urge the Department of Education
3 and school districts across this Commonwealth, together with
4 civic and political leaders in each community, individually and
5 in partnership, to immediately develop and continue to support
6 programs that encourage, as strongly as possible, every student
7 to provide service to the community.
