A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of April 2001 as "Pennsylvania Organ and
2 Tissue Donor Awareness Month."
3 WHEREAS, Organ and tissue transplantation has been recognized
4 as a corrective and lifesaving medical procedure; and
5 WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has 16 transplant centers and is
6 recognized as a world leader in organ and tissue
7 transplantation; and
8 WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than 79,000 people are
9 waiting for organ transplants in the United States; and
10 WHEREAS, Approximately 16 people die per day in the United
11 States while waiting for an organ transplant; and
12 WHEREAS, State law enables citizens to donate their organs
13 and tissues through written statements and also allows relatives
14 to consent to the donation of organs and tissues of a deceased
15 family member; and
16 WHEREAS, A vital component of the continuation and
1 advancement of organ transplantation is the retrieval of donor
2 organs and tissues; and
3 WHEREAS, Improved surgical techniques and drugs to offset
4 rejection of organs have resulted in a high success rate; and
5 WHEREAS, The number of people in need of transplants far
6 exceeds the number of organs and the amount of tissue available;
7 therefore be it
8 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2001
9 as "Pennsylvania Organ and Tissue Donor Awareness Month"; and be
10 it further
11 RESOLVED, That the Senate encourage all citizens of this
12 Commonwealth to carry donor cards or designate themselves as an <--
13 organ and tissue donor on their driver's license CONSIDER <--
14 DESIGNATING THEMSELVES AS ORGAN AND TISSUE DONORS ON THEIR
15 DRIVER'S LICENSES OR TO SIGN UP TO BECOME ORGAN DONORS and
16 discuss this decision with family members and friends.
