A RESOLUTION 1 Proclaiming the week of May 11 through 17, 1997, as "MADD Week" 2 in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, In 1995 drivers and pedestrians impaired by alcohol 4 and other drugs accounted for 514 highway deaths in 5 Pennsylvania; and 6 WHEREAS, Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of 7 death for children, adolescents and young adults in 8 Pennsylvania; and 9 WHEREAS, Alcohol is involved in nearly half of all traffic 10 fatalities; and 11 WHEREAS, Drunk driving is the nation's most frequently 12 committed violent crime; and 13 WHEREAS, Injury and property damage resulting from alcohol- 14 impaired driving have caused physical, emotional and economic 15 hardship for hundreds of thousands of adults and young people; 16 and
1 WHEREAS, Health care costs resulting from motor vehicle 2 injuries affect all Americans. Thousands of dollars can be saved 3 in health care costs alone for each serious injury that is 4 prevented; and 5 WHEREAS, Programs were developed throughout the years to 6 promote public awareness and raise consciousness about the 7 dangers of alcohol-impaired driving and other drug-impaired 8 driving; and 9 WHEREAS, During the week of May 11 through 17, 1997, MADD 10 chapters, DUI victims, advocates, trauma centers, law 11 enforcement officers, EMS personnel, hospital personnel, high 12 school educators, transportation safety prevention departments 13 and drug and alcohol prevention departments will all join 14 together to educate the public about the violent crime of drunk 15 driving; and 16 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth considers of utmost seriousness its 17 duty to protect its citizens from hazards such as impaired 18 drivers; therefore be it 19 RESOLVED, That the Senate proclaim the week of May 11 through 20 17, 1997, as "MADD Week" in Pennsylvania and call upon all 21 citizens, government agencies, public and private institutions, 22 businesses, hospitals and schools in this Commonwealth to 23 promote awareness of driver impairment courses, existing and 24 proposed laws intended to further reduce and prevent impaired 25 driving and opportunities to establish safer and healthier norms 26 regarding the use of alcohol and other drugs for all citizens.
