SENATE RESOLUTION

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of April 1 through 7, 2001, as "Lupus Alert
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Lupus is a potentially fatal autoimmune disease that
     4  affects approximately 1.4 million Americans, mostly women, with
     5  the highest prevalence among young women of color; and
     6     WHEREAS, Few people understand the seriousness of this
     7  confusing and potentially fatal disease or are fully aware of
     8  the symptoms of lupus; and
     9     WHEREAS, Lupus is a disease that can fool everyone, including
    10  victims of the disease, members of their families, doctors and
    11  research scientists; and
    12     WHEREAS, Increased public awareness will result in earlier
    13  diagnosis and the commencement of lifesaving treatment;
    14  therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the Senate urge all citizens to become
    16  involved in the search for a cause and cure for this chronic and
    17  debilitating disease by helping the Lupus Foundation of America


     1  support important programs of medical research, education,
     2  awareness, patient services and advocacy; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of April 1
     4  through 7, 2001, as "Lupus Alert Week" in Pennsylvania and urge
     5  all citizens to contact the Lupus Foundation of America to learn
     6  more about this widespread, devastating and discriminating
     7  disease.
