A RESOLUTION 1 Designating March 23, 1999, as "Independent College and 2 University Day" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania has the second 4 largest number of private colleges and universities in the 5 nation; and 6 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities enroll 41% of 7 the students in Pennsylvania higher education; and 8 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities award 51% of 9 the baccalaureate degrees in Pennsylvania; and 10 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities award 50% of 11 the degrees awarded to minority students in Pennsylvania; and 12 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities award 57% of 13 the advanced degrees in Pennsylvania; and 14 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities collectively 15 employ 63,000 people, making them the seventh largest private- 16 sector employer in Pennsylvania, with a total economic impact of 17 $10.3 billion; and
1 WHEREAS, Independent colleges and universities attract 15,000 2 talented young people to Pennsylvania every year, many of whom 3 stay to work in Pennsylvania upon graduation; and 4 WHEREAS, The presence of a large, healthy sector of 5 independent institutions of higher education results in enormous 6 investment of private dollars for educating our citizenry, 7 thereby saving State taxpayers significant expenditures; and 8 WHEREAS, All Pennsylvanians benefit to some degree from the 9 availability of independent colleges and universities throughout 10 this Commonwealth; therefore be it 11 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 23, 1999, as 12 "Independent College and University Day" in Pennsylvania.
