        INTRODUCED BY TOMLINSON, HELFRICK, STAPLETON, ROBBINS,
           SALVATORE, EARLL, BELAN, COSTA, WILLIAMS, BRIGHTBILL, WENGER,
           THOMPSON, MUSTO, AFFLERBACH, GREENLEAF, STOUT, LEMMOND,
           GERLACH, RHOADES, SCHWARTZ, MELLOW, KITCHEN AND WHITE,
           JUNE 9, 1997

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JUNE 9, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating June 10, 1997, as "Guide Dog Day" in Pennsylvania.

     2     WHEREAS, Guide dogs vest visually impaired persons with a
     3  sense of independence and dignity; and
     4     WHEREAS, Canines chosen to undergo guide dog training have
     5  demonstrated intelligence, dependability and confidence in all
     6  environments; and
     7     WHEREAS, These remarkable creatures undergo an intensive
     8  program of instruction during which they are taught, among other
     9  skills, to discern left from right, how to pull in harness and
    10  to stop at all curbs and steps; and
    11     WHEREAS, Guide dogs assist people with disabilities in
    12  addition to vision loss, such as hearing loss and orthopedic
    13  problems; and
    14     WHEREAS, These mannerly, well-adjusted dogs have enabled
    15  countless people to lead fuller, more active lives; therefore be
    16  it

     1     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania designate June 10,
     2  1997, as "Guide Dog Day" in Pennsylvania.
