A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 13, 1999, as "Library Appreciation Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, The week of April 11 through 17, 1999, is recognized 4 as "National Library Week"; and 5 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Library Association has designated 6 April 13, 1999, as "Pennsylvania Library Association Legislative 7 Day" at the Capitol in Harrisburg; and 8 WHEREAS, Free access to information is an essential 9 ingredient in a free and democratic society; and 10 WHEREAS, Free access to information is a hallmark of our 11 society, distinguishing it from some others in the world which 12 do not enjoy the freedoms that we, as American citizens, too 13 often take for granted; and 14 WHEREAS, Libraries serve as a focal point in communities 15 throughout this Commonwealth where free information is available 16 for people of all ages to learn, read, study and connect with a
1 vast wealth of information, entertainment and knowledge from a 2 wide variety of sources; and 3 WHEREAS, The wealth of information at libraries has expanded 4 exponentially with the advent of the Internet; and 5 WHEREAS, A library may be the only source of access to the 6 Internet for some members of our society; and 7 WHEREAS, Librarians perform an invaluable service to our 8 citizens by assisting library users in accessing the specific 9 information they require; therefore be it 10 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate April 13, 1999, as 11 "Library Appreciation Day" in recognition of the important role 12 libraries play in our society and in recognition of the services 13 librarians provide in assisting the public to access 14 information.
