SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 59 Session of 1997


        INTRODUCED BY GREENLEAF, WENGER, KASUNIC, TOMLINSON, HELFRICK,
           DELP AND HART, JUNE 26, 1997

        REFERRED TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, JUNE 26, 1997

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Encouraging the President and Congress to take action against
     2     foreign countries which allow persecution of Christians.

     3     WHEREAS, It is estimated that more than 160,000 individuals
     4  of Christian faith were martyred in 1996 in foreign countries;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, There are reports and widespread evidence of
     7  Christians who are suffering torture, slavery, starvation, rape,
     8  imprisonment and even death in foreign countries simply for
     9  their faith; and
    10     WHEREAS, The atrocities that are being committed on
    11  Christians in foreign lands are unconscionable and an abuse of
    12  human rights; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    14  encourage the President of the United States and the Congress of
    15  the United States to publicly disapprove of these atrocities and
    16  take appropriate action against countries which persecute
    17  Christians; and be it further


     1     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
     2  the President of the United States, to the presiding officers of
     3  each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from
     4  Pennsylvania.
