A RESOLUTION 1 Declaring the week of May 16 through 22, 1999, as "Emergency 2 Medical Services Week"; declaring May 16, 1999, as "Citizen 3 Recognition and Appreciation Day"; and declaring May 22, 4 1999, as "Emergency Medical Services Day" in Pennsylvania. 5 WHEREAS, The emergency medical services system in this 6 Commonwealth has been developed to provide emergency services 7 and care to the sick and injured and to provide transportation 8 to an appropriate medical or health care facility; and 9 WHEREAS, The citizens of this Commonwealth benefit daily from 10 this system and from the knowledge, skill, specialized training 11 and services of those providers who devote their lives to saving 12 the lives of others and who perform extraordinary public 13 services under sometimes stressful and often dangerous and 14 hazardous conditions; and 15 WHEREAS, Rapid access to quality and professional emergency 16 medical services and care dramatically improves the probability
1 of survival and recovery for those who experience sudden illness 2 or injury; and 3 WHEREAS, The emergency medical services community consists of 4 volunteer and paid providers, including physicians, nurses, 5 paramedics, emergency medical technicians, aeromedical 6 personnel, first responders, ambulance attendants, ambulance 7 drivers, police officers, firefighters and emergency services 8 dispatchers, as well as educators and administrators who support 9 and assist emergency medical services and in many instances the 10 public, who together comprise and link the emergency medical 11 services network; and 12 WHEREAS, In appreciation and recognition of the organized and 13 coordinated efforts of the Pennsylvania emergency medical 14 services system, those professionals who directly provide these 15 services and those who support and assist emergency medical 16 services, the Commonwealth should set aside a week to 17 commemorate, appreciate, recognize and support planned 18 activities in this Commonwealth; and 19 WHEREAS, "Emergency Medical Services Week" further serves to 20 inform the citizens of this Commonwealth of the availability, 21 importance and capability of their emergency medical services 22 system, to educate them about injury and illness prevention and 23 what to do when confronted with a medical emergency as well as 24 to encourage them to learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation, plan 25 and practice home and highway safety and instruct all family 26 members on the proper and appropriate use of the emergency 27 medical services system; therefore be it 28 RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the value and the 29 accomplishments of the emergency medical services community by 30 designating the week of May 16 through 22, 1999, as "Emergency 19990S0060R0881 - 2 -
1 Medical Services Week" in Pennsylvania; and be it further 2 RESOLVED, That the Senate declare Sunday, May 16, 1999, as 3 "Citizen Recognition and Appreciation Day" for the emergency 4 medical services community to acknowledge the citizens of this 5 Commonwealth who participate in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, 6 first aid, fundraising and other activities that support 7 emergency medical services in their communities in this 8 Commonwealth; and be it further 9 RESOLVED, That the Senate declare Saturday, May 22, 1999, as 10 "Emergency Medical Services Day" for the purpose of 11 appreciating, supporting and recognizing the professionals who 12 make up the entire emergency medical services community and all 13 of the services providers who support emergency medical services 14 in this Commonwealth.
