A RESOLUTION
1 Designating the month of April 2005 as "Parkinson's Disease
2 Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
3 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease is believed to affect
4 approximately 1 million people in the United States; and
5 WHEREAS, Approximately 40% of persons with Parkinson's
6 disease are under 60 years of age; and
7 WHEREAS, The cause of Parkinson's disease remains unclear,
8 but scientists believe that environmental factors trigger the
9 disease in people with a genetic susceptibility; and
10 WHEREAS, Parkinson's disease has been described as being the
11 opposite of Alzheimer's disease: while Alzheimer's destroys the
12 mind, leaving the body intact and functioning, Parkinson's
13 destroys motor systems but allows mental function; and
14 WHEREAS, The two most prevalent types of Parkinson's disease
15 are early-onset Parkinson's disease and late-onset Parkinson's
16 disease; and
17 WHEREAS, Early-onset Parkinson's disease begins before age 50
1 and accounts for 5% to 10% of all cases; and
2 WHEREAS, Late-onset Parkinson's disease starts at age 50 or
3 older and accounts for most cases of the disease; and
4 WHEREAS, Presently there is no cure for Parkinson's disease;
5 therefore be it
6 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2005
7 as "Parkinson's Disease Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
