A RESOLUTION

Designating the month of April 2009 as "Hemophilia Awareness

2

Month" in Pennsylvania.

3

WHEREAS, Hemophilia is the name of a genetic disorder that

4

impairs the body's ability to control bleeding; and

5

WHEREAS, Hemophilia is defined as excessive, uncontrollable

6

bleeding because of the missing or low-level clotting factor in

7

the blood; and

8

WHEREAS, Bleeding may occur even when there is no injury and

9

most often occurs in the joints and in the head; and

10

WHEREAS, There are approximately 20,000 citizens in the

11

United States with hemophilia and each year approximately 400

12

babies are born with the disorder; and

13

WHEREAS, There are approximately 1,700 Pennsylvania citizens

14

living with hemophilia; and

15

WHEREAS, Hemophilia affects males almost exclusively, one in

16

7,000, and is found in all populations; and

17

WHEREAS, Although there is no cure for hemophilia, it is a

lifelong condition that can be controlled with intravenous

2

infusion of factor replacement therapies; therefore be it

3

RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of April 2009

4

as "Hemophilia Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.
