        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 2, 2001

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the week of May 6 through 12, 2001, as "Tourism
     2     Week" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The week of May 6 through 12, 2001, has been
     4  selected as "National Tourism Promotion Week"; and
     5     WHEREAS, "National Tourism Week" was established in 1983,
     6  when the Congress of the United States passed a joint resolution
     7  designating a week in May 1984 as "National Tourism Week." In a
     8  White House ceremony, the President signed a Presidential
     9  Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with the
    10  appropriate ceremonies and activities; and
    11     WHEREAS, Tourism is a major contributor to the economy of
    12  this Commonwealth, providing in excess of $26.08 billion in
    13  visitor spending, over 500,000 jobs with an $11.2 billion
    14  payroll and nearly $1.1 billion in tax revenues for this
    15  Commonwealth; and
    16     WHEREAS, Small businesses account for 94% of the travel and
    17  tourism industry, but small does not equal insignificant, and
    18  spending by domestic and international travelers in 1999 was

     1  nearly $541.1 billion in the United States alone, making travel
     2  and tourism the country's third largest retail sales industry;
     3  and
     4     WHEREAS, Travel and tourism is the nation's largest services
     5  export, second largest employer after health services and third
     6  largest retail sales industry after auto dealers and food
     7  stores; therefore be it
     8     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize May 6 through 12, 2001,
     9  as "Tourism Week" in Pennsylvania.
