SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 79 Session of 1989


        INTRODUCED BY SALVATORE, WILLIAMS, SHUMAKER, ROCKS, REGOLI,
           O'PAKE, FUMO, HELFRICK, MADIGAN, JONES, PETERSON, PECORA,
           JUBELIRER, MELLOW, LEWIS, BELL, REIBMAN, LYNCH, FISHER, HESS
           AND BELAN, JUNE 13, 1989

        REFERRED TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, JUNE 13, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing Congress to pass legislation which requires the
     2     Secretary of Defense to implement actions to appoint military
     3     chaplains in representative proportion to the different
     4     faiths represented among the total membership of the armed
     5     forces.

     6     WHEREAS, The Secretary of Defense has been empowered
     7  traditionally to provide for the religious and spiritual needs
     8  of members of the armed forces by appointing military chaplains;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, There exists an imbalance in the representation of
    11  various religious faiths among chaplains of the armed forces as
    12  compared to the representation of those faiths among members of
    13  the armed forces as a whole; and
    14     WHEREAS, This body is concerned that the men and women from
    15  this Commonwealth who serve with commitment and gallantry in the
    16  armed forces of this Nation should have the religious and
    17  spiritual needs which arise during the course of their military
    18  service served by a chaplain of their faith; therefore be it


     1     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania memorialize
     2  Congress to pass legislation which requires the Secretary of
     3  Defense to implement actions to appoint military chaplains in
     4  representative proportion to the different faiths represented
     5  among the total membership of the armed forces; and be it
     6  further
     7     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
     8  the presiding officers of each house of Congress, to each member
     9  of Congress from Pennsylvania and to all members of the
    10  respective armed services committees of each house of Congress.
