        INTRODUCED BY RHOADES, TILGHMAN, WAGNER, COSTA, EARLL,
           SALVATORE, O'PAKE, LEMMOND, KUKOVICH, TOMLINSON, STOUT, DENT,
           BELAN, WHITE, BRIGHTBILL, THOMPSON, KASUNIC, BOSCOLA, MELLOW,
           HART AND SCHWARTZ, JUNE 3, 1999

        SENATOR LOEPER, RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, AS AMENDED,
           JUNE 9, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating Saturday, June 5, 1999, as "Riverday" THE WEEK OF     <--
     2     JUNE 5 THROUGH 12, 1999, AS "RIVERWEEK" in this Commonwealth
     3     in recognition of the value of Pennsylvania's rivers and
     4     streams and the efforts of Pennsylvania citizens who are
     5     committed to preserving water resources.

     6     WHEREAS, Many individuals, organizations and agencies in the
     7  Commonwealth of Pennsylvania are committed to preserving over
     8  83,000 miles of rivers and streams in Pennsylvania; and
     9     WHEREAS, One of the most significant problems facing
    10  Pennsylvania's rivers and streams is drainage from abandoned
    11  coal mining operations; and
    12     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's rivers and streams have suffered the
    13  effects of abandoned coal mine drainage which resulted in the
    14  pollution of over 3,000 miles of these rivers and streams; and
    15     WHEREAS, The Department of Environmental Protection, several
    16  other State bureaus and agencies, the Eastern Pennsylvania
    17  Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation, the Western
    18  Pennsylvania Coalition for Abandoned Mine Reclamation, county

     1  conservation districts and other State, county and local
     2  organizations have been active in promoting the partnerships
     3  necessary to effectively combat the problems of abandoned mine
     4  drainage and so preserve the rivers and streams that are
     5  threatened by this pollution; and
     6     WHEREAS, The continued success of these partnerships is
     7  dependent upon the support of citizens of this Commonwealth and
     8  upon the demonstration of their commitment to the preservation
     9  of Pennsylvania's rivers and streams; and
    10     WHEREAS, "Riverday" "RIVERWEEK" in this Commonwealth           <--
    11  represents a significant step toward raising public awareness
    12  about this issue and encouraging the support of Pennsylvania
    13  citizens; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate Saturday, June 5, THE      <--
    15  WEEK OF JUNE 5 THROUGH 12, 1999, as "Riverday" "RIVERWEEK" in     <--
    16  this Commonwealth and urge the support of activities related to
    17  the preservation of Pennsylvania's rivers and streams.
