A RESOLUTION 1 Commemorating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Flag 2 Day as a national holiday and honoring Collier Township for 3 its role in the history of Flag Day. 4 WHEREAS, This year our country is celebrating the 50th 5 anniversary of Flag Day; and 6 WHEREAS, William Kerr, founder of Flag Day, was a Collier 7 Township resident from 1911 to 1928, residing in the Rennerdale 8 section; and 9 WHEREAS, In 1888 Mr. Kerr founded the American Flag Day 10 Association of Western Pennsylvania with a goal to make Flag Day 11 a State and then national holiday; and 12 WHEREAS, In 1889 the national organization was founded, and 13 Mr. Kerr served as president for 50 years; and 14 WHEREAS, In the early 1900s, Pittsburgh began celebrating 15 Flag Week from June 8 through 14; and 16 WHEREAS, In 1916 President Woodrow Wilson issued a 17 proclamation stating that on June 14, throughout the nation and 18 in each community, Flag Day should be observed; and
1 WHEREAS, In 1949, with Mr. Kerr in his 80s, the Congress of 2 the United States passed a bill to proclaim Flag Day as a 3 national holiday on June 14 each year, and on August 3, 1949, 4 President Truman, with Mr. Kerr at his side, signed the Flag Day 5 bill; and 6 WHEREAS, Collier Township in cooperation with the Parks and 7 Recreation Department plans a Flag Day Celebration June 11 8 through 14, 1999; therefore be it 9 RESOLVED, That the Senate join in the 50th anniversary 10 observance of Flag Day on June 14, 1999, and honor Collier 11 Township for its role in the history of Flag Day.
