A RESOLUTION 1 Congratulating the United States Marshals Service on the 200th 2 anniversary of the Service. 3 WHEREAS, President George Washington administered the oath of 4 office to the 13 original United States marshals in 1789; and 5 WHEREAS, The United States Marshals Service (USMS) is the 6 nation's oldest and most versatile law enforcement agency; and 7 WHEREAS, The United States Marshals Service occupies a 8 uniquely central position in the Federal justice system. 9 Virtually every Federal law enforcement initiative involves the 10 USMS: the custody, care and transportation of Federal offenders; 11 the tracking and apprehension of Federal criminals who jump 12 bail, violate parole or escape from prison; protection of the 13 courts, judges, attorneys and witnesses; enforcement of court 14 orders; and management of assets seized or forfeited as a result 15 of their having been acquired from the profits of certain 16 criminal activities; and 17 WHEREAS, The untiring efforts of the dedicated members of the
1 United States Marshals Service should be recognized; and 2 WHEREAS, A national observance of the bicentennial of the 3 founding of the United States Marshals Service will be held in 4 Philadelphia on September 23, 1989; therefore be it 5 RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania congratulate the 6 approximately 3,000 members of the United States Marshals 7 Service, especially the 71 members who serve in the three 8 Federal Districts in Pennsylvania, on the occasion of the 200th 9 anniversary of the USMS and express its appreciation for the 10 vital services rendered by the USMS.
