A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Memorializing Congress to honor Commodore John Barry as the 2 first flag officer of the United States Navy. 3 WHEREAS, Commodore John Barry, an American merchant marine 4 captain and native of County Wexford, Ireland, volunteered his 5 services to the Continental Navy during the Revolutionary War; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, Throughout his career, Commodore Barry not only 8 provided the first and last victories at sea for the American 9 revolutionaries but also was responsible for the organization of 10 the historic crossing of the Delaware River by General George 11 Washington; and 12 WHEREAS, Under President Washington, Commodore Barry built 13 and first commanded the United States Navy and the squadron that 14 included his flagship, the USS United States, and the USS 15 Constitution, "Old Ironsides"; and 16 WHEREAS, Commodore Barry served as head of the United States 17 Navy under Presidents Washington, Adams and Jefferson; therefore
1 be it 2 RESOLVED (the House of Representatives concurring), That the 3 General Assembly memorialize the Congress of the United States 4 to honor Commodore John Barry as the first flag officer of the 5 United States Navy; and be it further 6 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be sent to the 7 presiding officers of each house of Congress and to all members 8 of Congress from Pennsylvania.
