        INTRODUCED BY MELLOW, BODACK, MUSTO, KUKOVICH, WAGNER, BELAN,
           STAPLETON, O'PAKE, THOMPSON, BRIGHTBILL, ARMSTRONG, STOUT,
           EARLL, JUBELIRER, TOMLINSON, SCHWARTZ, MOWERY, WHITE, COSTA,
           HOLL, WOZNIAK, LEMMOND, TILGHMAN, DENT, MURPHY, GREENLEAF,
           WENGER, HART, BOSCOLA, ROBBINS, SLOCUM, RHOADES AND KASUNIC,
           SEPTEMBER 28, 1999

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 28, 1999

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Urging the Governor to proclaim the month of October 1999 as
     2     "Lupus Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease which causes
     4  inflammation of various parts of the body, especially the skin,
     5  joints, blood and kidneys; and
     6     WHEREAS, Lupus affects one out of every 185 Americans and
     7  strikes adult women 10 to 15 times more frequently than adult
     8  men; and
     9     WHEREAS, Lupus is more prevalent in African-Americans,
    10  Latinos, Native Americans and Asians; and
    11     WHEREAS, More people have lupus than AIDS, cerebral palsy,
    12  multiple sclerosis, sickle cell anemia and cystic fibrosis
    13  combined; and
    14     WHEREAS, Thousands of Americans die each year from lupus-
    15  related complications; therefore be it
    16     RESOLVED, That the Senate urge the Governor to proclaim the

     1  month of October 1999 as "Lupus Awareness Month" in
     2  Pennsylvania; and be it further
     3     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
     4  Governor Thomas J. Ridge.
