A RESOLUTION 1 Designating October 6, 1989, as "German-American Day" in 2 Pennsylvania, honoring the 306th Anniversary of the arrival 3 in America of the first German colonists and recognizing the 4 important contributions of German Americans in the 5 development of the United States. 6 WHEREAS, The first German colonists, thirteen Mennonite 7 families, arrived in America on October 6, 1683, landing in 8 Philadelphia and settling in a part of the city, naming the area 9 Germantown; and 10 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania became a haven for many more Germans 11 fleeing religious persecution, including the Amish who still 12 maintain the lifestyle of the original settlers; and 13 WHEREAS, There are over 60 million Americans today of German 14 descent, more than any other ethnic group; and 15 WHEREAS, German Americans, beginning with Revolutionary War 16 hero Baron Von Steuben, have made economic, political, social 17 and cultural contributions which have greatly enhanced the 18 growth and development of the United States and in no state are
1 these contributions more significant than in Pennsylvania; 2 therefore be it 3 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 6, 1989, as 4 "German-American Day" in Pennsylvania, in honor of the 306th 5 Anniversary of the arrival in America of the first German 6 colonists and in recognition of the important contributions of 7 German Americans in the development of the United States.
