        REFERRED TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, SEPTEMBER 26, 1989

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Memorializing the United States Congress to study the problem of
     2     the deforestation of the rain forests in South America.

     3     WHEREAS, Rain forests are wet tropical wilderness lands found
     4  across the globe at or near the equator; and
     5     WHEREAS, Rain forests cover about 7% of the earth's surface;
     6  and
     7     WHEREAS, Some experts believe that every second an area of a
     8  rain forest equal to a football field is destroyed and by the
     9  year 2050 the world's rain forests will be depleted; and
    10     WHEREAS, Rain forests control the earth's temperature and
    11  climate and one-half of the world's animal and plant species are
    12  found in rain forests; and
    13     WHEREAS, Much damage to our planet would result from the
    14  deforestation of our rain forests; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania memorialize the
    16  United States Congress to study the problem of the deforestation
    17  of the rain forests in South America and to take whatever


     1  actions are necessary to prevent the loss of the rain forests.
