A RESOLUTION 1 Commending Pennsylvania's and the nation's military personnel 2 for their service and supporting the President of the United 3 States as Commander-in-Chief of our armed services. 4 WHEREAS, As our nation prepares its response to the horrors 5 visited on our people on September 11, 2001, we pause to lend 6 our support and give thanks to those who will be seeking justice 7 for our beloved dead and injured; and 8 WHEREAS, As the President of the United States, George W. 9 Bush, said in his speech to the nation during a joint session of 10 the Congress of the United States on September 20, 2001: 11 "Whether we bring our enemies to justice, or bring justice to 12 our enemies, justice will be done"; and 13 WHEREAS, We wholeheartedly support the President of the 14 United States in his pledge to use every resource at America's 15 disposal to successfully conclude the conflict brought to our
1 peaceful shores, whether through diplomacy, the use of 2 intelligence capabilities, instruments of law enforcement and 3 elimination of financial resources or every necessary weapon of 4 war; and 5 WHEREAS, We recognize that a nation cannot maintain peace 6 without a willingness to defend itself against terrorism or 7 aggression; and 8 WHEREAS, The President of the United States has authorized 9 the call-up of 50,000 reservists; and 10 WHEREAS, More than 35,000 reservists have been activated for 11 homeland defense in order to permit troops to engage in other 12 duties; and 13 WHEREAS, Those soldiers, sailors and Marines now being 14 deployed have our complete support, unending thanks and 15 countless prayers; and 16 WHEREAS, We pray that our men and women in uniform will be 17 comforted and given strength to perform the very difficult tasks 18 ahead of them; and 19 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Division of the National Guard, 20 known as the 28th Infantry Division, is the oldest division in 21 the Army in continuous service; and 22 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania has the largest National Guard unit in 23 the United States; and 24 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's National Guard has played a crucial 25 role in every major conflict since the early days of our nation; 26 and 27 WHEREAS, The valiant citizen-soldiers of Pennsylvania's 28 National Guard, all 22,000 men and women, are properly trained 29 and stand ready to do whatever is needed in the defense of our 30 Commonwealth, our nation and our freedom; therefore be it 20010S0109R1328 - 2 -
1 RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania 2 and the people of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania commend and 3 support the President of the United States as the Commander-in- 4 Chief of our armed services; and be it further 5 RESOLVED, That the Senate send its support, prayers and 6 gratitude to all our military service personnel as they 7 undertake the difficult tasks that may lie ahead; and be it 8 further 9 RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to 10 the President of the United States, the presiding officers of 11 each house of Congress and to each member of Congress from 12 Pennsylvania.
