REFERRED TO EDUCATION, OCTOBER 23, 1989
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 1 Directing the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association 2 to prohibit its member schools from participating in 3 televised sporting events that are carried beyond 4 Pennsylvania State lines. 5 WHEREAS, The growth of cable television and 24-hour sports 6 channels have inexorably led to putting high school sporting 7 events on television; and 8 WHEREAS, Only one in every 50 high school athletes goes on to 9 perform in college, and an even smaller percentage goes on to 10 perform in professional sports; and 11 WHEREAS, We want to encourage our children to view education 12 as the means to achieve success, not the highly improbable 13 avenue of professional sports; and 14 WHEREAS, Our public policy is intended to encourage a strong 15 emphasis upon academic achievement in public schools; and 16 WHEREAS, Money generated from television contracts has had a 17 recognized negative influence on college athletics; and 18 WHEREAS, Pennsylvanians want our high school athletics to
1 remain free from the unnecessary, illogical and misplaced 2 emphasis upon sports that accompanies large television 3 contracts; therefore be it 4 RESOLVED (the House of Representatives concurring), That the 5 General Assembly direct the Pennsylvania Interscholastic 6 Athletic Association to approve a policy prohibiting its member 7 schools from participating in televised sporting events that are 8 carried beyond State lines.
