A RESOLUTION 1 Honoring the career accomplishments of basketball champion Wilt 2 Chamberlain, who died on October 12, 1999. 3 WHEREAS, Wilton Norman Chamberlain was born in Philadelphia 4 on August 21, 1936; and 5 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain received his childhood education in 6 Philadelphia and attended the University of Kansas; and 7 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain was one of the greatest offensive 8 basketball players the game has ever seen; and 9 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain was drafted by the Philadelphia 10 Warriors in 1959, followed the franchise to San Francisco in 11 1962 and returned to Pennsylvania to play with the Philadelphia 12 76ers halfway through the 1964-1965 basketball season until his 13 retirement from the National Basketball Association (NBA) at the 14 end of the 1972-1973 season; and 15 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain is the only NBA player to have 16 scored 4,000 points in a season, and he set the following NBA
1 single-game records: most points (100), most consecutive field 2 goals (18) and most rebounds (55); and 3 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain is the second all-time NBA scorer 4 in career points with 31,419, is first in the league with 23,924 5 rebounds and led the NBA in scoring for seven consecutive years; 6 and 7 WHEREAS, In 1978, the first year of eligibility, Wilt 8 Chamberlain was elected to the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall 9 of Fame, and in 1996-1997 he was selected to the NBA's 50th 10 Anniversary All-Time Team; and 11 WHEREAS, Wilt Chamberlain died on October 12, 1999, in Bel 12 Air, California, at 63 years of age after leading a 13 distinguished professional basketball career; therefore be it 14 RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the career accomplishments of 15 basketball champion Wilt Chamberlain, who died on October 12, 16 1999.
