No. 122 Session of 2005


        INTRODUCED BY STACK, MELLOW, KASUNIC, PUNT, STOUT, MUSTO, PIPPY,
           BOSCOLA, WOZNIAK, EARLL, TARTAGLIONE, WENGER, LAVALLE,
           ARMSTRONG, COSTA, ERICKSON, GREENLEAF, KITCHEN, LOGAN,
           C. WILLIAMS, PICCOLA, THOMPSON, WAUGH, LEMMOND, O'PAKE,
           PILEGGI, BRIGHTBILL, D. WHITE, RAFFERTY AND ORIE,
           MAY 11, 2005

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 11, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Proclaiming May 15, 2005, as "Israel Independence Day" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, After World War II thousands of Jewish refugees who
     4  survived Hitler's genocide of six million Jews emigrated to
     5  British-held Palestine, their ancestral home, where thousands of
     6  other Jews lived for more than 2,000 years; and
     7     WHEREAS, The British withdrew from Palestine on May 14, 1948;
     8  and
     9     WHEREAS, The State of Israel was established on May 14, 1948,
    10  as a Western-style democracy; and
    11     WHEREAS, The State of Israel began its existence by extending
    12  a hand of peace to all neighboring states, calling for good
    13  neighborliness and mutual cooperation with the independent
    14  Jewish nation; and
    15     WHEREAS, We condemn the cruel and inhuman acts of terrorism
    16  and call for the implementation of effective measures to combat

     1  those who support terrorism in the Middle East and the United
     2  States; and
     3     WHEREAS, Israel's cultural vitality, military strength and
     4  political, economic and social ties to the United States are a
     5  continuing source of pride to the 360,000 Jews in this
     6  Commonwealth; and
     7     WHEREAS, We recognize that peace is nurtured by a strong
     8  economy and we encourage business persons in this Commonwealth
     9  to contribute to the maintenance of peace by exploring and
    10  investing in the expanded opportunities for trade with Israel
    11  and her neighbors; and
    12     WHEREAS, This year marks the 57th anniversary of the
    13  establishment of the State of Israel; therefore be it
    14     RESOLVED, That the Senate proclaim May 15, 2005, as "Israel
    15  Independence Day" in Pennsylvania; and be it further
    16     RESOLVED, That there is a special kinship between the
    17  governments and peoples of Israel and the United States and
    18  therefore we call upon the President, his administration and the
    19  Congress of the United States to continue their support and
    20  involvement in the peace process.
