SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 138 Session of 2005


        INTRODUCED BY WAUGH AND WENGER, JUNE 22, 2005

        REFERRED TO ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCES AND ENERGY, JUNE 22, 2005

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Expressing support of the efforts of the United States Secretary
     2     of the Interior to study the feasibility of designating the
     3     Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Watertrail as
     4     a national historic trail.

     5     WHEREAS, Our nation will celebrate the 400th anniversary of
     6  the founding of Jamestown in 2007; and
     7     WHEREAS, Captain John Smith's leadership and courage were
     8  instrumental in establishing the Jamestown colony; and
     9     WHEREAS, Captain John Smith and his 12-man crew explored
    10  almost 3,000 miles of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries;
    11  and
    12     WHEREAS, Captain John Smith's vivid descriptions of the
    13  Chesapeake Bay inspired exploration and settlement of the New
    14  World; and
    15     WHEREAS, Legislation has been introduced in the United States
    16  Senate to direct the United States Secretary of the Interior to
    17  study the feasibility of designating the Captain John Smith
    18  Chesapeake National Historic Watertrail as a national historic
    19  trail; and

     1     WHEREAS, The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic
     2  Watertrail would provide rich opportunities for education,
     3  recreation and heritage tourism for the 16 million Americans
     4  living in the Chesapeake Bay watershed and for visitors to the
     5  region; and
     6     WHEREAS, The Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic
     7  Watertrail would complement the more than 645 miles of existing
     8  water trails in the Susquehanna River Basin of the Commonwealth
     9  of Pennsylvania; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Susquehanna River supplies more than 50% of the
    11  Chesapeake Bay's fresh water; therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
    13  support the efforts of the United States Secretary of the
    14  Interior to study the feasibility of designating the Captain
    15  John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Watertrail as a national
    16  historic trail; and be it further
    17     RESOLVED, That copies of this resolution be transmitted to
    18  the United States Secretary of the Interior and to each member
    19  of Congress from Pennsylvania.
