| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating June 11, 2011, as "Alex's Lemonade Stand Day" in |
2 | Pennsylvania and encouraging all citizens to contribute to |
3 | the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other pediatric |
4 | cancer research programs. |
5 | WHEREAS, Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in |
6 | children under 20 years of age; and |
7 | WHEREAS, About 12,400 children are diagnosed with cancer in |
8 | the United States each year; and |
9 | WHEREAS, Due to advances in research, the childhood cancer |
10 | cure rate has climbed to about 80%; and |
11 | WHEREAS, Alexandra Scott was an extraordinary person who was |
12 | diagnosed with neuroblastoma, an aggressive childhood cancer, |
13 | two days before her first birthday; and |
14 | WHEREAS, In July 2000, at the age of four, Alex opened her |
15 | first lemonade stand to raise money for pediatric cancer |
16 | research; and |
17 | WHEREAS, On August 1, 2004, Alex passed away at the age of |
18 | eight; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Since Alex's first lemonade stand in 2000, there |
2 | have been more than 4,000 Alex's Lemonade Stands and events held |
3 | in all 50 states; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation was created to |
5 | accept and manage donations from all over the world; and |
6 | WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation has raised |
7 | nearly $35 million for pediatric cancer research thereby far |
8 | surpassing the $1 million monetary goal established by Alex |
9 | before she passed away; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Alex's efforts have garnered national and |
11 | international attention and have inspired hundreds of |
12 | individuals to donate to pediatric cancer research; and |
13 | WHEREAS, The Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation continues to |
14 | raise awareness and financial support for research in childhood |
15 | cancers; and |
16 | WHEREAS, During the weekend of June 10 through 12, 2011, |
17 | volunteers across the country will host an Alex's Lemonade Stand |
18 | to support Alex's cause in the fight to find a cure for |
19 | childhood cancers; therefore be it |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate June 11, 2011, as "Alex's |
21 | Lemonade Stand Day" in Pennsylvania and encourage all citizens |
22 | to contribute to the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation and other |
23 | pediatric cancer research programs. |
