SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 139 Session of 2007


        INTRODUCED BY BRUBAKER, FERLO, FONTANA, KASUNIC, COSTA, PUNT,
           O'PAKE, LAVALLE, PIPPY, DINNIMAN, BOSCOLA, ROBBINS AND
           MADIGAN, JUNE 25, 2007

        REFERRED TO AGRICULTURE AND RURAL AFFAIRS, JUNE 25, 2007

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of August 2007 as "Pennsylvania Produce
     2     Month."

     3     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry generates more
     4  than $110 million in revenues for the economy of this
     5  Commonwealth; and
     6     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's 3,500 farm families manage about
     7  48,000 acres which produce more than 200,000 tons of vegetables
     8  for fresh consumption and processing use; and
     9     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable growers are national
    10  leaders in the production of pumpkins (4th), processing snap
    11  beans (6th), cantaloupes (7th), fresh market sweet corn (7th)
    12  and processing sweet corn (8th); and
    13     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania vegetables are not only "Simply
    14  Delicious" but also "Simply Nutritious" in providing important
    15  vitamins, fiber and other dietary components essential to a
    16  healthy, balanced diet; and
    17     WHEREAS, Health authorities have long encouraged increased


     1  consumption of vegetables for nutrition and disease prevention;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, Fresh Pennsylvania vegetables are available in
     4  abundant supply and peak quality at community farmers' markets,
     5  roadside farm markets and supermarkets throughout this
     6  Commonwealth during August; and
     7     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania's vegetable industry is committed to
     8  using integrated pest management and other good agricultural
     9  practices to produce, in an environmentally sound manner,
    10  vegetables and vegetable products that are nutritious and safe;
    11  therefore be it
    12     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of August 2007
    13  as "Pennsylvania Produce Month" and urge all citizens to enjoy
    14  this Commonwealth's abundant supply of "Simply Delicious, Simply
    15  Nutritious" fresh and processed vegetable products while
    16  recognizing the industry's contributions to our economy and our
    17  health.
