THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF PENNSYLVANIA

SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 140 Session of 1990

INTRODUCED BY SCANLON, FEBRUARY 6, 1990

REFERRED TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, FEBRUARY 6, 1990

                                  A RESOLUTION

1 Memorializing Congress to enact legislation regarding
2 immigration reform, particularly when it impacts Irish
     3 immigrants.

4 WHEREAS, The Senate of Pennsylvania recognizes that there has
5 been a large influx of Irish immigrants into Pennsylvania in
6 recent years and that the overwhelming majority of these new
     7 immigrants are undocumented; and
8 WHEREAS, Many of the new immigrants do not have close family
9 ties in America and are therefore unable to achieve legal status
10 under the current immigration system; and
11 WHEREAS, The Senate is aware that this wave of immigrants
12 follows in the tradition of previous generations of Irish of
13 being hard working and eager to contribute to the American
    14 economy; and
15 WHEREAS, The people of Pennsylvania are keen to see that the
16 new immigrants have the same opportunity as past generations to
    17 contribute; and
18 WHEREAS, The Congress of the United States is currently

1 considering the issue of immigration reform; therefore be it
2 RESOLVED That the Senate of Pennsylvania hereby calls upon
3 the Congress of the United States to enact legal immigration
4 reform which will introduce an independent category for
5 immigrants who do not have close family ties and also to ensure
6 that any such legislation passed provides redress to Ireland and
7 to those other countries identified by the State Department as
8 being adversely affected by the Immigration Act of 1965.
