A RESOLUTION 1 Designating April 22, 1990, as "Earth Day 1990." 2 WHEREAS, Almost 20 years ago, more than 20 million Americans 3 joined together on "Earth Day" in a demonstration of concern for 4 the environment, creating an informed public whose collective 5 action resulted in the passage of sweeping new laws to protect 6 our air, water and land; and 7 WHEREAS, In the 19 years since the first "Earth Day," despite 8 environmental improvements, the environmental health of the 9 planet is increasingly endangered, threatened by global climate 10 change, ozone depletion, tropical deforestation, ocean 11 pollution, toxic wastes, desertification and nuclear waste, 12 requiring action by all sectors of society; and 13 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" is a national and international 14 call-to-action for all citizens to join in a global effort to 15 save the planet; and 16 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" activities and events will educate 17 all citizens on the importance of acting in an environmentally
1 sensitive fashion by recycling, conserving energy and water, 2 using efficient transportation and adopting more ecologically 3 sound lifestyles; and 4 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" activities and events will educate 5 all citizens on the importance of buying and using only those 6 products least harmful to the environment; and 7 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" activities and events will educate 8 all citizens on the importance of doing business only with those 9 companies that are environmentally sensitive and responsible; 10 and 11 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" activities and events will educate 12 all citizens on the importance of voting for those candidates 13 who demonstrate an abiding concern for the environment; and 14 WHEREAS, "Earth Day 1990" activities and events will educate 15 all citizens on the importance of supporting the passage of 16 legislation that will help protect the environment; therefore be 17 it 18 RESOLVED, That the Senate of Pennsylvania designate April 22, 19 1990, as "Earth Day 1990" and that the day shall be set aside 20 for appropriate public activities.
