SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 160 Session of 2000


        INTRODUCED BY MOWERY, WAGNER, COSTA, SCHWARTZ, TARTAGLIONE,
           TOMLINSON, THOMPSON, WENGER, O'PAKE, DENT, MURPHY, SALVATORE,
           MUSTO, EARLL, HART, WHITE, RHOADES, MELLOW, STOUT, GREENLEAF,
           KASUNIC AND BOSCOLA, APRIL 11, 2000

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, APRIL 11, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating May 1 through 7, 2000, as "Medicare Awareness Week"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, There are more than 2 million Medicare beneficiaries
     4  in this Commonwealth; and
     5     WHEREAS, These beneficiaries have certain rights under
     6  Medicare, including, but not limited to, the following:
     7         (1)  The right to receive good quality health care.
     8         (2)  The right to be admitted to a hospital when it is
     9     medically necessary.
    10         (3)  The right to stay in a hospital until it is
    11     medically safe to leave;
    12  and
    13     WHEREAS, Many of these beneficiaries are not aware of their
    14  Medicare rights; and
    15     WHEREAS, Pennsylvania is moving into a new century when
    16  Medicare beneficiaries will be expected to be informed health
    17  care consumers; and

     1     WHEREAS, The importance of education in addressing specific
     2  health care issues is particularly essential to Medicare
     3  beneficiaries; and
     4     WHEREAS, Keystone Peer Review Organization (KePro) is charged
     5  by Medicare to protect patient rights and inform beneficiaries
     6  about their rights to quality medical care; therefore be it
     7     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate May 1 through 7, 2000, as
     8  "Medicare Awareness Week" in Pennsylvania.
