           THOMPSON, HOLL, SCHWARTZ, MOWERY, STAPLETON, COSTA, WENGER,
           WAGNER, TILGHMAN, BODACK, EARLL, HELFRICK, KASUNIC, O'PAKE,
           GERLACH, BOSCOLA, BELAN, LOEPER, GREENLEAF, TARTAGLIONE,
           RHOADES, WHITE, PUNT, DENT, WAUGH, ROBBINS, WOZNIAK,
           BRIGHTBILL, STOUT, LAVALLE, LEMMOND, BELL AND ARMSTRONG,

        AMENDED, OCTOBER 2, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Honoring the 225th anniversary of the United States Marine Corps
     2     on November 10, 2000.

     3     WHEREAS, On November 10, 1775, the Continental Congress met
     4  in Philadelphia and passed a resolution calling for two
     5  battalions of Marines to be raised for service as landing forces
     6  with the fleet; and
     7     WHEREAS, That resolution established the Continental Marines
     8  and marked the birth date of the United States Marine Corps; and
     9     WHEREAS, Beginning with its first amphibious raid in March
    10  1776 and continuing to the present, the United States Marine
    11  Corps has distinguished itself in defending the United States
    12  through courageous action in numerous wars and armed conflicts;
    13  and
    14     WHEREAS, Since the 1980s the United States Marine Corps has
    15  also served an important role for the United States by


     1  participating in international peacekeeping efforts and by
     2  providing security and assistance in the evacuation of American
     3  citizens during periods of political and civil instability in
     4  nations around the world; and
     5     WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps Warfighting
     6  Laboratory was created in 1995 to evaluate change, assess the
     7  impact of new technologies and expedite the introduction of new
     8  capabilities into the operating forces of the United States
     9  Marine Corps through exercises such as "Hunter Warrior" and
    10  "Urban Warrior" which explore future tactical concepts and
    11  examine facets of military operations in urban environments; and
    12     WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps stands ready to
    13  continue in the proud tradition of those who so valiantly fought
    14  and died at Belleau Wood, Iwo Jima, the Chosin Reservoir and,     <--
    15  Khe Sanh, DESERT STORM AND OTHER ARMED CONFLICTS IN WHICH THE     <--
    16  UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS WAS INVOLVED; and
    17     WHEREAS, The United States Marine Corps has a long and proud
    18  heritage of faithful service to the nation as it celebrates its
    19  225th anniversary on November 10, 2000; therefore be it
    20     RESOLVED, That the Senate honor the 225th anniversary of the
    21  United States Marine Corps on November 10, 2000.
