           BRIGHTBILL, CONTI, CORMAN, COSTA, DENT, EARLL, GERLACH, HART,
           HOLL, KASUNIC, LAVALLE, LEMMOND, MOWERY, MURPHY, MUSTO,
           O'PAKE, SALVATORE, STOUT, TARTAGLIONE, TILGHMAN, TOMLINSON,
           THOMPSON, WAGNER, WENGER AND WHITE, SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

        REFERRED TO RULES AND EXECUTIVE NOMINATIONS, SEPTEMBER 25, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating October 2000 as "Italian American Heritage Month" in
     2     Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The discovery of the American continents was made by
     4  an Italian explorer, Christopher Columbus, on October 12, 1492;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, An Italian named Giovanni Caboto, better known in
     7  American history as John Cabot, discovered the mainland of North
     8  America; and
     9     WHEREAS, An Italian American, William Paca, was a signer of
    10  the Declaration of Independence; and
    11     WHEREAS, Ever since, Italian Americans have contributed to
    12  the growth and development of this Commonwealth and the United
    13  States of America; and
    14     WHEREAS, Many Italians and Italian Americans have made
    15  significant contributions in the areas of science, art,
    16  literature, government and, of course, the cuisine of the United


     1  States; and
     2     WHEREAS, This Commonwealth has benefited from Italian
     3  American entrepreneurs Amedeo Obici and Mario Peruzzi, who
     4  founded the Planter's Peanut Company in Wilkes-Barre in 1908;
     5  and
     6     WHEREAS, Italian Americans have served in the armed forces of
     7  the United States to help protect this great nation and preserve
     8  the inalienable rights of life, liberty and the pursuit of
     9  happiness; and
    10     WHEREAS, Of the more than 15 million Americans of Italian
    11  descent in the United States, approximately 1.5 million are
    12  Pennsylvanians; and
    13     WHEREAS, Italian Americans are the fifth largest ethnic group
    14  in the United States; therefore be it
    15     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate October 2000 as "Italian
    16  American Heritage Month" in Pennsylvania and honor those
    17  Pennsylvanians of Italian descent.
