SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 209 Session of 2000


        INTRODUCED BY GREENLEAF, LOEPER, MELLOW, BELAN, BOSCOLA,
           BRIGHTBILL, COSTA, DENT, EARLL, GERLACH, HELFRICK, KITCHEN,
           LAVALLE, O'PAKE, ROBBINS, SALVATORE, STOUT, TARTAGLIONE,
           THOMPSON, TILGHMAN, TOMLINSON, WAGNER, WENGER, WHITE,
           SCHWARTZ AND WAUGH, SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, SEPTEMBER 26, 2000

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the month of September 2000 as "Prostate Cancer
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Cancer of the prostate is, with the exception of
     4  skin cancer, the most common type of cancer among American men
     5  and is the second leading cause of cancer death among them; and
     6     WHEREAS, In the year 2000, the American Cancer Society
     7  estimates that 180,400 men will be diagnosed with prostate
     8  cancer in the United States and 31,900 men will die of this
     9  disease; and
    10     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania Department of Health reports that
    11  each year there are about 10,000 new prostate cancer cases
    12  diagnosed among men in this Commonwealth and nearly 2,000
    13  Pennsylvania men die from the disease; and
    14     WHEREAS, The risk of developing prostate cancer increases
    15  with age, as evidenced by the fact that 75% of men with new
    16  diagnoses of prostate cancer are over 65 years of age; and


     1     WHEREAS, Prostate cancer is twice as common among African-
     2  American men; and
     3     WHEREAS, Early detection and screening for prostate cancer
     4  are vital to combating the disease, especially for all men over
     5  50 years of age, black men and men with a family history of
     6  prostate cancer; and
     7     WHEREAS, With early detection, the five-year relative
     8  survival rate for men with localized prostate cancer is 100%;
     9  and
    10     WHEREAS, Greater public awareness and education about
    11  prostate cancer is necessary to help protect the health and
    12  welfare of men; therefore be it
    13     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate September 2000 as
    14  "Prostate Cancer Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and encourage
    15  all men to educate themselves about the risk of prostate cancer.
