SENATE BILL

No. 215 Session of 1989

        REFERRED TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND WELFARE, JANUARY 23, 1989

                                     AN ACT

     1  Requiring the Department of Health, along with the Pennsylvania
     2     Game Commission, to organize and coordinate a program for the
     3     diagnosis and study of Lyme disease and to prepare and
     4     disseminate information.

     5     The General Assembly of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     6  hereby enacts as follows:
     7  Section 1.  Short title.
     8     This act shall be known and may be cited as the Lyme Disease
     9  Program and Information Act.
    10  Section 2.  Program.
    11     The Department of Health and the Pennsylvania Game Commission
    12  shall establish deer check stations, which shall check deer
    13  kills and shall make random checks on wild deer to ascertain
    14  whether they are carrying ticks that are carriers of Lyme
    15  disease. The department, along with the commission, shall
    16  promulgate rules and regulations necessary to carry out the
    17  provisions of this act.
    18  Section 3.  Information.


     1     The Department of Health shall gather information which
     2  shall:
     3         (1)  Target high risk areas for public education.
     4         (2)  Develop Statewide prevention strategies.
     5         (3)  Generate objective information required in
     6     formulating policy regarding the reporting of Lyme disease.
     7         (4)  Determine the Statewide distribution of ticks which
     8     are known or suspected of transmitting Lyme disease.
     9         (5)  Develop meaningful educational material for
    10     physicians.
    11         (6)  Develop ties with The Pennsylvania State University.
    12  Section 4.  Dissemination.
    13     The Department of Health shall prepare brochures on Lyme
    14  disease and mail this information to health care professionals
    15  and to all persons who purchase hunting licenses.
    16  Section 5.  Effective date.
    17     This act shall take effect in 60 days.
