A RESOLUTION 1 Designating February 3, 2006, as "Wear Red for Women Day" in 2 Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Diseases of the heart are the nation's leading cause 4 of death, and stroke is the third leading cause of death; and 5 WHEREAS, Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) claim the lives of 6 more than 480,000 women in the United States each year, with 7 about one death per minute; and 8 WHEREAS, Each year, of the females who die, 53% die from CVD, 9 as compared to 46% men; and 10 WHEREAS, About 35,000 more females than males die from a 11 stroke; and 12 WHEREAS, In 2006 the estimated direct and indirect cost of 13 CVD and stroke in the United States is $403.1 billion; and 14 WHEREAS, More women die from CVD than from the next six 15 leading causes of death combined, including all cancers; and 16 WHEREAS, Only 13% of women consider CVD their greatest health
1 risk; and 2 WHEREAS, February is designated as "American Heart Month"; 3 and 4 WHEREAS, "Go Red for Women" is the American Heart 5 Association's national call to increase awareness of CVD, the 6 leading cause of death for women, and to inspire women to take 7 charge of their heart health; therefore be it 8 RESOLVED, That the Senate, in recognition of the importance 9 of the ongoing fight against heart disease and stroke, designate 10 February 3, 2006, as "Wear Red for Women Day" in Pennsylvania 11 and urge all citizens to show their support for women and the 12 fight against heart disease by wearing red on this day.
