        INTRODUCED BY ORIE, TARTAGLIONE, WASHINGTON, O'PAKE, D. WHITE,
           WONDERLING, FONTANA, PIPPY, THOMPSON, C. WILLIAMS, COSTA,
           BRIGHTBILL, PUNT, ERICKSON, WOZNIAK, TOMLINSON, EARLL,
           RAFFERTY, ARMSTRONG, LOGAN, PILEGGI, LEMMOND, M. WHITE,
           MUSTO, CONTI, STACK, BROWNE, WENGER, SCARNATI AND KASUNIC,

        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, JANUARY 31, 2006

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Recognizing the month of February 2006 as "Women's Heart
     2     Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke are largely preventable
     4  with early detection and prevention; and
     5     WHEREAS, Heart disease and stroke affect one out of two
     6  women; and
     7     WHEREAS, Someone dies every 33 seconds of cardiovascular
     8  disease; and
     9     WHEREAS, Each year since 1984 the number of cardiovascular
    10  disease deaths for females has exceeded the number of
    11  cardiovascular disease deaths for males; and
    12     WHEREAS, More than 505,000 women die each year from all heart
    13  and blood vessel diseases combined; and
    14     WHEREAS, Thirty-eight percent of women who have heart attacks
    15  die within a year; and
    16     WHEREAS, More than 45% of women have high cholesterol; and

     1     WHEREAS, Women account for nearly 62% of total stroke deaths;
     2  and
     3     WHEREAS, The cost of cardiovascular disease and stroke in the
     4  United States in 2003 has been estimated at more than $300
     5  billion; and
     6     WHEREAS, Compliance with prescription instructions, medical
     7  guidelines and physician directives is important to
     8  cardiovascular health; and
     9     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is committed to
    10  public education about heart disease and stroke and urges women
    11  to learn about risk factors for heart disease and stroke and to
    12  take action to reduce, control or prevent as many risk factors
    13  as possible; and
    14     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association supports ongoing
    15  medical research to promote early detection, prevention and
    16  treatment of heart disease and stroke; and
    17     WHEREAS, The American Heart Association is the largest
    18  voluntary, not-for-profit organization whose mission is to
    19  reduce disability and death from cardiovascular diseases and
    20  stroke; and
    21     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania/Delaware Affiliate of the American
    22  Heart Association spent more than $14 million during fiscal year
    23  2001-2002 for research support, public and professional
    24  education and community programs; therefore be it
    25     RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of February
    26  2006 as "Women's Heart Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania and urge
    27  all citizens to spread the message that cardiovascular disease
    28  is the number one health threat for women and men; and be it
    29  further
    30     RESOLVED, That the Senate challenge all Pennsylvanians to

     1  take charge of their cardiovascular health and to support the
     2  lifesaving mission carried out by the more than 220,000 American
     3  Heart Association volunteers in this Commonwealth.
