| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Recognizing the month of November 2009 as "National Family |
2 | Caregiver Month" in Pennsylvania and commending the service |
3 | and dedication family caregivers provide to older adult |
4 | family members and friends. |
5 | WHEREAS, "National Family Caregiver Month" is recognized to |
6 | draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers, |
7 | to advocate for stronger public policy to address family |
8 | caregiving issues and to raise awareness about community |
9 | programs that support family caregivers; and |
10 | WHEREAS, An estimated 54 million Americans provide care for |
11 | adult family members and friends with disabling conditions or |
12 | illnesses according to Contact Greater Philadelphia and Bucks |
13 | County Children of Aging Parents; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Seventy-eight percent of all adults receiving long- |
15 | term care at home rely exclusively on family and friends to |
16 | provide assistance; and |
17 | WHEREAS, Family caregivers provide a vast array of nursing, |
18 | social, emotional and financial services on a daily basis for |
19 | years or possibly even a lifetime; and |

1 | WHEREAS, Family involvement is critical to maintain the |
2 | independence of older adults who need assistance with activities |
3 | of daily living; and |
4 | WHEREAS, Primary caregivers who provide continuous care in |
5 | the home often gain a great deal of personal satisfaction, but |
6 | they can also experience physical, psychological and financial |
7 | stress; therefore be it |
8 | RESOLVED, That the Senate recognize the month of November |
9 | 2009 as "National Family Caregiver Month" in Pennsylvania and |
10 | commend the service and dedication of this Commonwealth's family |
11 | caregivers who improve the lives of many older Pennsylvanians. |
