A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the week of May 4 through 11, 2002, as "SAFE KIDS 2 Week" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Unintentional injury is the number one killer of 4 children 14 years of age and under; and 5 WHEREAS, In 1999 in Pennsylvania 566 children under 15 years 6 of age were treated in hospitals for bicycle-related injuries; 7 and 8 WHEREAS, Between 1995 and 1999, 1,161 Pennsylvania children 9 under 15 years of age suffered traumatic brain injuries from 10 pedalcycle crashes; and 11 WHEREAS, The single most effective safety device available to 12 reduce head injury and death from bicycle crashes is a helmet; 13 and 14 WHEREAS, National estimates report that helmet use among 15 child bicyclists ranges from only 15% to 25%; and 16 WHEREAS, Every dollar spent on a bicycle helmet saves $30 in
1 direct medical costs and other costs to society; and 2 WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania SAFE KIDS Coalition is a grassroots 3 effort to reduce injuries and deaths to children under 15 years 4 of age in this Commonwealth; and 5 WHEREAS, The Statewide SAFE KIDS Coalition and 37 local 6 chapters and coalitions are working in communities to make 7 people more aware of injury risks, including head injuries, and 8 ways to eliminate them; and 9 WHEREAS, Pennsylvania SAFE KIDS is part of the National SAFE 10 KIDS Campaign; and 11 WHEREAS, The week of May 4 through 11, 2002, has been 12 designated as "National SAFE KIDS Week"; therefore be it 13 RESOLVED, That in order to increase public awareness about 14 child safety and traumatic brain injury, the Senate designate 15 the week of May 4 through 11, 2002, as "SAFE KIDS Week" in 16 Pennsylvania.
