SENATE RESOLUTION

No. 227 Session of 1998


        INTRODUCED BY O'PAKE, BRIGHTBILL, TOMLINSON, MUSTO, LAVALLE,
           STAPLETON, COSTA, WHITE, AFFLERBACH, BELL, KASUNIC, SCHWARTZ
           AND MURPHY, OCTOBER 2, 1998

        REFERRED TO INTERGOVERNMENTAL AFFAIRS, OCTOBER 2, 1998

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Requesting the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee of the United
     2     States Postal Service to consider and recommend to the United
     3     States Postal Service Board of Governors the issue of a
     4     commemorative stamp celebrating St. Patrick's Day.

     5     WHEREAS, St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, served as
     6  a British missionary and bishop in Ireland in the second half of
     7  the 5th century; and
     8     WHEREAS, Patrick was born in Britain and was carried into
     9  slavery in Ireland, serving more than six years in captivity
    10  before reuniting with his family; and
    11     WHEREAS, Patrick returned to Ireland, traveling widely in his
    12  missionary career and becoming a legendary figure in the
    13  centuries after his death; and
    14     WHEREAS, Observance of St. Patrick's feast day, March 17,
    15  began in America in 1737; and
    16     WHEREAS, St. Patrick's Day observances have continued in
    17  celebration of the rich legacy of the Irish and Irish-Americans
    18  in the United States; therefore be it


     1     RESOLVED, That the Senate of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania
     2  request the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee of the United
     3  States Postal Service to consider and recommend to the United
     4  States Postal Service Board of Governors the issue of a
     5  commemorative stamp celebrating St. Patrick's Day; and be it
     6  further
     7     RESOLVED, That the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee direct
     8  its response to the offices of the Majority Caucus Chairman and
     9  the Minority Caucus Chairman of the Senate of Pennsylvania,
    10  Harrisburg, Pennsylvania 17120; and be it further
    11     RESOLVED, That a copy of this resolution be transmitted to
    12  the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee, Stamp Support Branch,
    13  United States Postal Service, Room 5670, 475 L'Enfant Plaza SW.,
    14  Washington, D.C., 20260-0010.
