A RESOLUTION 1 Designating the month of May 2004 as "Amyotrophic Lateral 2 Sclerosis Awareness Month" in Pennsylvania. 3 WHEREAS, Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), often known as 4 Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive disorder that occurs when 5 motor nerve cells in the central nervous system cease 6 functioning and die; and 7 WHEREAS, Each year more than 5,000 people in the United 8 States are diagnosed with ALS, a disease for which there is no 9 known cause or cure; and 10 WHEREAS, In its advanced stages, ALS care can cost up to 11 $200,000 per year, depleting the financial resources of patients 12 and relatives; and 13 WHEREAS, The suffering of patients and the anguish and 14 struggle of caregivers must be supported and alleviated as much 15 as possible; therefore be it 16 RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the month of May 2004 as
