| A RESOLUTION |
| |
1 | Designating March 2012 as "American Red Cross Month" in |
2 | Pennsylvania. |
3 | WHEREAS, On May 21, 1881, Clara Barton founded the American |
4 | Association of the Red Cross; and |
5 | WHEREAS, In 1900 the Congress of the United States granted |
6 | the American Red Cross a charter, making the volunteer |
7 | organization responsible for providing services to members of |
8 | the armed forces of the United States and relief to disaster |
9 | victims at home and abroad; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Today's American Red Cross is a humanitarian |
11 | organization led by volunteers that provides relief to victims |
12 | of disasters and helps people prevent, prepare for and respond |
13 | to emergencies; and |
14 | WHEREAS, For more than a century, the American Red Cross has |
15 | been at the forefront of helping Americans prevent, prepare for |
16 | and respond to large and small disasters, and just as families |

1 | and communities depend on the Red Cross in times of need, the |
2 | Red Cross depends on the support of the American people to help |
3 | sustain the foundation; and |
4 | WHEREAS, The American Red Cross strives to prevent and |
5 | alleviate human suffering wherever it may be found, to protect |
6 | life and health and to ensure respect for each human being; and |
7 | WHEREAS, The American Red Cross makes no discrimination as to |
8 | nationality, race, religious beliefs, class or political |
9 | opinions; and |
10 | WHEREAS, Services provided by the American Red Cross promote |
11 | mutual understanding, friendship, cooperation and lasting peace |
12 | among all peoples; and |
13 | WHEREAS, As demonstrated by their response to Hurricane Irene |
14 | and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011, the 44 American Red Cross |
15 | chapters in Pennsylvania meet the needs of hundreds of thousands |
16 | of individuals and families throughout the State by: responding |
17 | to hundreds of disasters, providing emergency communications to |
18 | United States Armed Forces servicemen and servicewomen and their |
19 | families, training thousands of people in providing disaster |
20 | relief services and training and certifying thousands more |
21 | people in vital, lifesaving skills including CPR, AED, first |
22 | aid, water safety and HIV/AIDS prevention; and |
23 | WHEREAS, Currently, many workers representing the American |
24 | Red Cross remain in Haiti to help the thousands of local |
25 | volunteers with rebuilding efforts after the earthquake of |
26 | January 12, 2010; and |
27 | WHEREAS, The American Red Cross sheltered more than 6,000, |
28 | and fed more than 250,000 Pennsylvanians during Hurricane Irene |
29 | and Tropical Storm Lee during August and September 2011. Red |
30 | Cross relief efforts provided more than $3.4 million in |

1 | assistance to State residents; and |
2 | WHEREAS, In fiscal year 2011, the volunteers and staff of the |
3 | American Red Cross responded to 2,971 disasters throughout this |
4 | Commonwealth, caring for more than 4,000 families in addition to |
5 | massive relief efforts during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm |
6 | Lee; and |
7 | WHEREAS, Three and two tenths per cent of the residents of |
8 | this Commonwealth learned lifesaving, aquatics and disaster |
9 | preparedness programs through the American Red Cross during |
10 | 2011; and |
11 | WHEREAS, More than 35,000 Pennsylvanians serve as volunteers |
12 | for the American Red Cross and stand prepared to prevent and |
13 | respond to disasters within our Commonwealth; and |
14 | WHEREAS, Residents of Pennsylvania donated hundreds of |
15 | thousands of units of lifesaving blood to help save the lives of |
16 | their neighbors in need; and |
17 | WHEREAS, The American Red Cross will continue to play a |
18 | valuable role in catastrophic relief, humanitarianism and |
19 | volunteerism during the 21st century; therefore be it |
20 | RESOLVED, That the Senate designate March 2012 as "American |
21 | Red Cross Month" in Pennsylvania; and be it further |
22 | RESOLVED, That the Senate commend the American Red Cross, all |
23 | of its employees and all of its volunteers for their service and |
24 | dedication to the communities and residents of this |
25 | Commonwealth. |
