        INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 3, 2004

                                  A RESOLUTION

     1  Designating the week of May 6 through 12, 2004, as "Nurses Week"
     2     in Pennsylvania.

     3     WHEREAS, The nearly 2.7 million registered nurses in the
     4  United States comprise our nation's largest health care
     5  profession; and
     6     WHEREAS, The depth and breadth of the registered nursing
     7  profession meet the different and emerging health care needs of
     8  the American population in a wide range of settings; and
     9     WHEREAS, The American Nurses Association, as the voice for
    10  the registered nurses of this country, is working to chart a new
    11  course for a healthy nation that relies on increasing delivery
    12  of primary and preventative health care; and
    13     WHEREAS, A renewed emphasis on primary and preventative
    14  health care requires better utilization of all of our nation's


     1  registered nursing resources; and
     2     WHEREAS, Professional nursing has been demonstrated to be an
     3  indispensable component in the safety and quality of care of
     4  hospitalized patients; and
     5     WHEREAS, The demand for registered nursing services will be
     6  greater than ever because of the aging of the American
     7  population, the continuing expansion of life-sustaining
     8  technology and the explosive growth of home health care
     9  services; and
    10     WHEREAS, More qualified registered nurses will be needed in
    11  the future to meet the increasingly complex needs of health care
    12  consumers; and
    13     WHEREAS, The cost-effective, safe and quality health care
    14  services registered nurses provide will be an increasingly
    15  important component of the United States health care delivery
    16  system in the future; and
    17     WHEREAS, The Pennsylvania State Nurses Association, along
    18  with the American Nurses Association, has declared the week
    19  beginning May 6 and ending May 12, the birthday of Florence
    20  Nightingale, as "Nurses Week 2004" with the theme "Nurses - Your
    21  Voice, Your Health, Your Life" in celebration of the ways in
    22  which registered nurses strive to provide safe and high-quality
    23  patient care and map out ways to improve our health care system;
    24  therefore be it
    25     RESOLVED, That the Senate designate the week of May 6 through
    26  12, 2004, as "Nurses Week" in Pennsylvania in appreciation of
    27  the specialized skills and hard work of these valued health care
    28  professionals; and be it further
    29     RESOLVED, That the Senate join the American Nurses
    30  Association and the Pennsylvania State Nurses Association in

     1  showing appreciation for the nation's registered nurses during
     2  this week and at every opportunity throughout the year.
